RCERO Educational Walk, Ljubljana

Recycled instruments at a modern landfill.

The educational walk of the Regional Centre for Waste Management (RCERO) is a landscaped educational pathway on the landfill itself. It consists of eleven thematic points, where visitors gain information on materials, recycling, and reuse of waste through guidance. It has been proven that if we incorporate more opportunities for personal experiences for pupils into the learning process, this greatly increases the quality of education. That is why we wanted to offer visitors a fun and at the same time practical experience that they can transfer into everyday life - to experience materials through sound.

For this purpose, we presented waste at each thematic station by upgrading it into a unique instrument. Visitors get acquainted with the type of waste, but at the same time experience it in a different form. Waste becomes an object that offers the visitor a new experience - to create and listen to the sounds and tones produced by individual materials. We designed the musical instruments in collaboration with the musician and instrument maker Samo Kutin and graphically edited some elements with Botas studio.

Golden Pencil Award

In 2017, the entire RCERO project, which includes our educational walk, received the highest architectural award, the Golden Pencil, awarded by the Chamber of Architecture and Spatial Planning to the best projects in Slovenia.

“The implemented project expands social awareness of waste management and tackles sustainability issues in a complex and playful way. In this special case, the jury also appreciates the simplicity of the project, its interaction with the material, the efficient use of colour, directional graphics and marking systems, and a generally witty approach to a complex and particularly technical task.” (Golden Pencil award jury)
