Oases, Ljubljana
Vivid colors and bold patterns have revealed forgotten pocket spaces on the riverbank.
The Oases project included the revitalization of three concrete platforms, otherwise used by firefighters to pump water, between Cukrarna and Tržnica Moste. We recognised the platforms as valuable but overlooked public spaces, that is why we gave them a new look. Our goal was to motivate the residents to use these spaces and connect with the river, which raises the quality of living in surrounding neighbourhoods.
We collaborated with a young artist known by the nickname Lo Milo, who painted the platforms in vivid colours and bold patterns. His artistic expression derives from minimalism and is based on a site-specific approach. According to him, architecture as a dominant factor in the urban environment plays an important role in his work, and with his approach he draws attention to the overlooked but beautiful elements that are offered by mundane "utilitarian" architecture. At the same time, Lo Milo establishes an important dividing line between art and vandalism.
On June 17, we prepared a one-day opening event, where each platform hosted different program. The first platform served as a kayak renting spot, the second as a pup-up restaurant, and the third platform hosted a concert. After the event, only ground murals remained on the platforms.
