Open public space in Ljubljana

VISIONS SO 3, an exhibition organized by Association of Architects, in its third year in a row invited prostoRož to participate. This year’s theme focused on open and urban public spaces in Slovenia’s capital (streets, squares, platforms, underpasses, parks), on their potential uses, on their role in the urban context of Ljubljana, and on the social content of public space and examples of successful interventions. In the times of rapid construction projects in the city, it was important to remind the authorities how important public space actually is.

The exhibition was divided into four parts, according to their purpose and content: PARKS, SQUARES, STREETS and THE RIVER. The main part of the event was a presentation of 22 unrealized projects in Ljubljana that have been on the minds of urban planners for the past couple of years, including prostoRož. After the exhibition, some of those project were at least partially implemented.

At the square in front of Kresija Gallery, ProstoRož team set up an installation that attempted to draw attention to the newly formed space: the street in front of the gallery turned into a square. It was no longer dominated by cars and busses after the closure of the Tromostovje Bridge for traffic. We also put down the names of existent, known or less known public spaces in Ljubljana and reminded people of their hidden potentials.
